Mesa Didyma (Μέσα Διδύμα) is a small village in the southern half of the island of Chios, Greece. My great-grandmother was born there and I always like to go and take a short walk through the village when I’m visiting the island. It’s about 17km from Chios Town.

Exploring the Village

There’s nothing of interest to see but it’s nice to walk through the narrow alleys passing between some colorful homes. It’s quite a sleepy place, and has very curious inhabitants who always say hello and strike up a conversation. At times, I often find myself the only person walking through the village.

Didyma means “twin” in Greek, and Mesa Didyma’s twin village is nearby Exo Didyma, which is even smaller. Together, the two villages are called Didymes (Twins). Most of the inhabitants are farmers who cultivate mastic trees and olives. Nearby, your can find the Byzantine church of Panagia Sikelia. I usually combine a visit to the church with a stroll through the villages.
