San Marcos is a small city in the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin. It’s home to Texas State University.
While visiting Big Bend country in West Texas, we made it a point to stop in Marfa. We had to see this quirky town full of art galleries in person.
While Martin stayed back in Salt Lake City to catch up on some work, Gönül and I headed north of the city for the day. Our first stop was in Ogden for a quick look around.

Thessaloniki is the culinary capital of Greece, but where can you eat? There are plenty of options in the city center for every budget and taste. My favorite place to eat and be entertained is at Ladadika, which is covered in a separate post.
From Konak Square (Konak Meydanı) there is direct access to Izmir’s historic bazaar district of Kemeraltı. A street with the funny name, Anafartlar Street (Anafartlar Caddesi), leads directly into the heart of the area.
Choices for food in Chios Town, the capital of Chios, Greece, are plenty. From traditional tavernas to fast food souvlaki joints to cafés serving frappe and desserts, there’s always something good to eat.
Pyrgi (Πυργί) is a medieval village in Chios, Greece, famous for the black and white geometrical designs on the buildings called xysta. Wandering through the narrow streets will leave you mesmerized by the designs. The village is located in the southern half of the island.
The best day trip I took in Albania was to the town of Berat. Old Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It consists of a village built into a medieval castle, and two lower towns, Mangalemi and Gorica, separated by a river. I was only able to visit the castle district due to a small detour involving coffee, but it was well worth it.
