The Cascadas de Juan Curí are a series of waterfalls about 30 minutes south of San Gil.
Getting to Cascadas de Juan Curí
If you don’t have your own transportation, you can take a bus from San Gil heading to Charalá and ask the driver to let you off at “las cascadas”. They’ll know to stop at Juan Curí Park (Parque Juan Curí). Through the main gates, you’ll find a restaurant as well as cabanas for rent.
Trail to the Falls
You can access the waterfall and swimming hole from an easy 2 kilometer trail starting near the restaurant at the park. It costs COP$12,000 per person (as of May 2024), payable at the entrance. The trail is mostly flat along a stone path until you get closer to the waterfall. Signs along the way report your progress.
Waterfall
At the end of the trail you come to the lower part of the falls. There’s a small section where you have to climb up a few steep stone steps using a rope.
At the top of the steps, you’ve finally reached the plunge pool of the waterfall. You won’t be able to see the entire waterfall but just a section of it. You can take a dip in the plunge pool if you wish. The water is ice cold but refreshing!
It’s possible to spend a good few hours there or even bring a picnic for lunch, like a few others did during our visit. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can rappel down the waterfall. That activity can be arranged ahead of time and costs COP$70,000 per person (as of May 2024).
