The Neo-Romanesque crypt of the Almudena Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena) in Madrid, Spain, is well worth taking the time to visit. The crypt opened in 1911 but was originally a church built in 1868. The cathedral was built on top starting in 1883.
Visitors to Madrid can find the Arab Walls (Muralla Árabe), which is a surviving section of the old Muslim walls of the city. They’re located just outside the entrance to the crypt of the Almudena Cathedral.
Plaza de la Villa was one of the main plazas in medieval Madrid. It was originally known as Plaza de San Salvador and contains three buildings of important historical value.
San Miguel Market (Mercado de San Miguel) is a popular market in Madrid, just west of Plaza Mayor. It’s a gourmet market rather than a traditional market.
For restaurants in Madrid, unfortunately I can’t remember anywhere I ate back in 2010 other than when I went on a tapas tour. My only record of restaurants are from three separate one day trips in December 2016, October 2018, and July 2019.

Puerta del Sol is one of the most well-known and busiest places in Madrid. It’s located in the heart of the city and is a popular meeting place for locals.
Madrid is the capital of Spain. With its excellent historic sites, beautiful architecture, and delicious food, it makes for a great few days of exploration. It’s also a good base for day trips to a few other cities. I’ve visited Madrid four times and passed through on an overnight layover another time, and always look forward to going back to see more.
