I took a day and did a scenic drive in northern Chios, Greece, that took me through about two dozen small villages. You will notice a completely different landscape and vegetation than in the southern part of the island, and you can see a different natural beauty on this side of the island.
Volissos (Βολισσός) is the largest village in northwest Chios, Greece. It sits on a hill that is crowned by a ruined medieval castle. I used the village as a start and end point for half of a scenic drive around northern Chios.
The Monastery of Agia Markella (Αγία Mαρκέλλα) is one of the holiest places in Chios, Greece. The patron saint of the island, St. Markella, was martyred there in the 14th century. It’s located just outside of the town of Volissos.
Other than Nea Moni, there are a couple Byzantine churches hidden away in Chios, Greece, that are worth seeking out. They’re located on the southern half of the island.
Vrontados (Βροντάδος) is a large town north of Chora in Chios, Greece. It’s the home of many Chian ship owners and the famous rouketopolemos, or rocket war, at Easter. Other than lots of churches, there are a couple points of interest.
Chios Town (Χίος), also called Chora (Χώρα) or sometimes Kastro (Κάστρο), is the capital of Chios, Greece, and the main city on the island. There are several points of interest and historic sites, along with a beautiful harbor lined with restaurants and cafés that are full of life day and night.
