Athens has a great variety of hotels for all budgets. Many tourists like to stay in Syntagma, Plaka, and Monastiraki.

Electra Metropolis

The best hotel I’ve stayed at in Athens is the Electra Metropolis. I was invited to stay there on a quick trip from Istanbul in October 2018, and I would definitely stay there again if I have the chance. The hotel opened in September 2016 and is located at the beginning of Mitropoleos Street, just two blocks from Syntagma Square.

The hotel building was once the Ministry of Education, designed by Patroklos Karantinos (1903-1976). It features 216 luxurious rooms, restaurants, bars, a café, and spa. The rooftop terrace has a pool.

My room was extremely comfortable and modern. It was more spacious than I had expected and was completely silent at night. I had three amazing nights of sleep.

The buffet breakfast at the rooftop restaurant has an incredible variety of food. Even better are the views of the Acropolis.

Electra Palace

On the same trip, some family members stayed a few blocks away at the Electra Palace. It’s the older cousin of the Electra Metropolis, and has been one of the city’s best hotels for years.

The Electra Palace is a throwback but the rooms are modern. It features a rooftop restaurant and pool with great views of the Acropolis, and the service is excellent.

Beautiful City Suites

While leading a tour in June 2023, I stayed two nights at Beautiful City Suites. It’s tucked away in an alley in the heart of Monastiraki. The building is a classical 1920s Athenian construction with a very good restaurant downstairs, and it’s just steps from the Ancient Agora of Athens and Monastiraki Square.

The rooms are a bit small but very comfortable and clean. My room even had a balcony with Acropolis views. I slept well despite being in the middle of all the action, and I enjoyed the hospitality. There’s no breakfast included and no reception, but the restaurant staff downstairs can take care of any issues you may have during your stay.

V&V Apartment

Just off Agia Eirini Square is V&V Apartment. This place is a fantastic option for anyone wanting to feel like a local while in Athens. It’s a great centrally located apartment and the hosts have thought of everything.

The spacious apartment comes with a living room, small kitchen and dining area, bedroom, and bathroom. There’s a washing machine, air conditioning, refrigerator stocked with juice and some snacks. It’s also only a few blocks away from a supermarket and there are several restaurants and bars nearby.

Athinaikon (Permanently Closed)

On a quick trip in November 2013 for some personal business and sightseeing, I stayed at Athinaikon in Psyrri. It’s a small budget hotel conveniently located just a five minute walk from Monastiraki Square. It’s run by a very friendly and helpful family that helped me greatly during my stay. The room was small yet comfortable and clean.

There were two nights when I mysteriously had mosquitoes buzzing around my ears and eating me alive. I’m not quite sure why because my window was closed. Anyway, I was unfortunately kept awake and had to play the role of “mosquito slayer” before getting any rest.
