Nisswa has a few good options for food and accommodation. I decided to eat dinner at the Big Axe Brewing Company. If the kitchen is open, I can highly recommend having a meal there. If not, stick around and try one of the craft beers brewed on site. I had a brisket sandwich and a glass of amber ale. Both the food and beer were excellent. Guests order and pay at the counter, find a seat, and food is brought to the tables. Service was quick and friendly.
A visit to Nisswa isn’t complete without a stop at The Chocolate Ox. This small candy and ice cream shop is perfect on a summer day. With a big variety of candies and ice cream flavors, you’ll find what you’re looking for. The Chocolate Ox is open daily from 10am to 9pm.
I stayed at the Magnuson Hotel. It’s a suite hotel just south of downtown Nisswa. It has competitive rates, friendly staff, fast wifi and free breakfast until 9:30am. My only complaints are that the floor was a little sticky and my bath towel had hair on it.
I paid a visit to the Grand View Lodge, which is located on the north shore of Gull Lake. It offers excellent facilities with a beach and 45 holes of golf, and is one of the best resorts in Minnesota. IT has immaculate cabins and vacation homes for rent on several hundred acres of property. There are a few restaurants on the property as well, including a branch of The Chocolate Ox. It’s great for special events and long getaways for groups, families, or couples.
Nisswa is just 15 minutes north of Brainerd and Baxter, which both offer more in terms of food choices, shopping, and accommodation.
