Christkindlmarket is one of the most popular holiday events in Chicago. Held annually, it typically runs daily from mid-November to December 24.
Where to Experience Christkindlmarket in Chicago
Christkindlmarket was inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and attracts vendors from all over the world. There are two locations in the city. The main location is at Daley Plaza in the Loop, and the other is at Gallagher Way outside Wrigley Field in Lakeview. The Gallagher Way location is much less crowded, but personally I think Daley plaza has better options for vendors. You can’t go wrong at either location for food.
When to Visit Christkindlmarket in Chicago
I’ve visited Christkindlmarket over a few different years and have always tried to avoid weekends. That’s when the market always seems to be completely packed. On weekdays, it’s much less crowded. I also try to go during the day as early as possible when there are fewer people rather than in the evening.
Christkindlmarket at Gallagher Way
If you’re visiting as a family and looking to avoid the crowds, Gallagher Way is the way to go. The Gallagher Way location seems to be much more family and kid-friendly. We took our toddler there and he loved riding the carousel. We also had the chance to take him to Winterland at Wrigley Field.
Vendors at Christkindlmarket
Many of the market’s vendors offer traditional Christmas crafts and ornaments. Others sell German steins and winter clothing. As far as food, you can find German bratwurst, sauerkraut, cheeses, roasted nuts, apple cider, hot chocolate, and more. Just be aware that some only accept cash. (Note: on my last visit to Christkindlmarket at Gallagher Way, every vendor accepted credit cards.)
Frank’s Ornament House
One of the most popular vendors is Frank’s Ornament House, which brings hundreds of types of handmade glass ornaments from Germany. They’re at the Loop location. The lines can be very long just to get into the door!
