Ojo Caliente is an unincorporated community in northern New Mexico famous for its hot springs. It’s located between Española and Taos, and not too far from Santa Fe.
Because we wanted to explore the life of Georgia O’Keeffe, we paid a visit to Ghost Ranch. It sits on 21,000 acres of gorgeous scenery. The ranch is a short drive from Abiquiu and provides excellent opportunities for outdoor activities.
Abiquiu is a tiny town in northern New Mexico, not too far from Santa Fe and Los Alamos. It was made famous by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) and is the location of Ghost Ranch, which is covered in another entry.
The Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is a fantastic place to learn about what goes on at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The lab was established in 1942 for the development of the world’s first atomic bomb. Today, it’s an important scientific research institution.
The San Ildefonso Pueblo is one of six Tewa pueblos in New Mexico. It’s located in the northern part of the state near Los Alamos and is self-governing.
The main reason to visit Chimayó is the Santuario de Chimayó, which is the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in the United States. It’s located in northern New Mexico.
Española is a small city in northern New Mexico. It’s located a short drive from both Los Alamos and Santa Fe. We didn’t spend too much time in town, using it more as a base to visit Los Alamos and a few other nearby places.
Technically I didn’t visit the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It wasn’t officially established until two weeks after I was in town.
The town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, is the birthplace of the atomic bomb and the home of a branch of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. It makes a great day trip from Santa Fe or a great base for Bandelier National Monument and the surrounding area.
Alcove House Trail is a short trail at Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. It’s one mile long round-trip and is accessed at the halfway point of the Main Loop Trail.
