Jericho is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, dating back to almost 9000 BC. In addition to the Christian pilgrimage sites, there are a handful of important archaeological sites.
After walking down from Tel Rumeida, we passed through a checkpoint from al-Shuhada Street to meet our guide for the Palestinian area of the Old City of Hebron.
Tel Rumeida is the oldest part of the city of Hebron, Palestine. It sits on a hill to the west of the Old City, and contains both an Israeli settlement and Palestinian homes.
Before coming to the Beit Hadassah settlement in Hebron, we passed a street with an Israeli checkpoint leading to the Palestinian side of the Old City. Just as on al-Shuhada Street, all the shops were closed, the awnings rusted, and the street sat a virtual ghost town.
Al-Shuhada Street is a major road in the Old City of Hebron, Palestine. It’s the main road leading to the Tomb of the Patriarchs and translates to Martyrs’ Street. The street is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Old City of Hebron.

After visiting the Tomb of the Patriarchs, we began our walk through a section of the Old City of Hebron completely off limits to Palestinians. The area is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Old City of Hebron.
