The Moenave Dinosaur Tracks are about five miles west of Tuba City, Arizona, in Navajo Nation.

Introduction to the Moenave Dinosaur Tracks

The Moenave Dinosaur Tracks date back to the Early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago. They’ve been verified by paleontologists from Northern Arizona University. Although they can’t determine the exact type of dinosaur that made the tracks, it’s assumed they belonged to Coelophysis or Dilophosaurus. Overall, it’s a worthy stop and great if you’re traveling with kids.

Visiting the Site

The turn to the site is marked with a homemade sign. You’ll find a row of vendors selling local jewelry and crafts, and there are a couple of locals on hand to provide tours and information on what you’re looking at. Admission is free (as of October 2025), but it’s appropriate to either buy something from the vendors or take a tour. You can tip your guide anywhere between US$5 and US$20. Keep in mind you probably won’t get a completely accurate scientific explanation.

Our tour took about 15 minutes in all. The guide did a great job taking us through the site and showing us some interesting dinosaur tracks that we otherwise wouldn’t have spotted on our own.

Highlights included a huge bone coming out of the ground as well as what our guide interpreted as a gigantic footprint from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The famed T-Rex lived in what is now western North America in the Cretaceous Period, about 68 million years ago, so it was more than likely incorrect information. He also misidentified other tracks as velociraptor and pterodactyl, but we weren’t too concerned about his accuracy.

One of the funny surprises on the tour was that we even got to see coprolite, which is actually fossilized dinosaur poop! He also pointed out dinosaur eggs and what looked to be a fossilized nail.
