The Promenade of the Naval Heroes (Paseo de los Héroes Navales) is located a few blocks south of Plaza San Martín in the UNESCO World Heritage listed historic city center of Lima. It’s a long park filled with sculptures, bushes, and flowers.
The Promenade of the Naval Heroes was built in the 1920s. Constructed underneath it is a Metropolitano station, Central Station (Estación Central). If you decide to walk between the passage and Plaza San Martín, take extra precautions.
Rímac Building
To the north end of the passage is the Rímac Building (Edificio Rímac), built in 1919. It is also known as Casa Roosevelt. One of the first elevators in Lima was installed in this building.
Palace of Justice
Along the east side of the promenade is the massive Palace of Justice (Palacio de Justicia). It’s a courthouse completed in 1938.
Italian Art Museum
Along the west side is the Italian Art Museum (Museo de Arte Italiano). It was built in 1921 as a gift of the Italian immigrants in Lima for the 100th anniversary of Peru’s independence. It’s located in a small park called Parque Juana Alarco Dammert.
Plaza Grau
To the south of the promenade is Plaza Grau. It’s a traffic circle with a large monument in the middle.
Located on Plaza Grau is the Lima Art Museum (Museo de Arte de Lima). It was originally the Exposition Palace (Palacio de la Exposición), built in 1872 for the International Exposition of Lima.
National Stadium
Further south is National Stadium (Estadio Nacional). It was built in 1952 and has a capacity of 45,000. The stadium hosts Peru’s national football team and many concerts. The photo below was taken in 2009 before it was renovated and modernized.
