The main attractions in Colonia del Sacramento are in the small historic district. If you have time, there are a few interesting things to see just outside of that part of town.
Piers
A good place to start is just north of the historic district. There are two piers making up the Old Port (Puerto Viejo) that are both nice to walk down, the Yacht Harbor (Puerto de Yates) and the old pier. I prefer the old pier.
Bastion of Carmen Cultural Center
If you follow the main road into the modern part of town, you’ll pass the Bastion of Carmen Cultural Center (Centro Cultural Bastión del Carmen). This was once part of the city’s fortifications but it’s been converted into a theater and gallery. There’s a nice view of it from the old pier.
Craft Fair
Along the coast you will find a small beach, the Urban Rowing Beach (Playa Urbana del Rowing). The Craft Fair (Feria Artesanal) is across the street. There are lots of handmade goods and souvenirs to buy there.
Stadium
Behind the Craft Fair is a small park with a stadium next to it. Walk up the hill behind the park and check out the wall of the stadium. It’s a huge mural that goes the entire length of the wall. There are some colorful and interesting images to see. The stadium is called Professor Alberto Suppici Stadium (Estadio Profesor Alberto Suppici). It was named for Alberto Suppici, the coach of the 1930 Uruguayan World Cup team.
Streets
The streets just outside of the core historic part of town are pleasant but not too interesting.
