The amusement park in Pripyat was set up for use during May Day and Victory Day celebrations. Because the Chernobyl disaster happened just days before the important holidays, none of the attractions were ever used. The amusement park is one of the eeriest areas in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, yet it’s also the most photogenic.
The amusement park was called Park of Culture and Rest (Парк культуры и отдыха) and had five attractions: the Ferris Wheel “Circular Overview” (Круговой обзор); Autodrome (Автодром) bumper cars; Chamomile (Ромашка) paratrooper ride; Russian Swing (Русские качели) swing boat ride; and carnival shooting games.
Ferris Wheel
I enjoyed photographing the Ferris Wheel more than any other part of the amusement park. It was the most hair-raising part of my visit to the Exclusion Zone, especially when I could hear the creaking of the metal in the wind that periodically broke the total silence. The Ferris Wheel is one of the most photographed attractions in Pripyat.
