At the end of Republic Street is the Kütahya Great Mosque (Kütahya Ulu Camii), also known as the Yıldırım Bayezid Han Mosque (Yıldırım Bayezid Han Camii).
This grand mosque was built between 1381 and 1410 under Sultan Bayezid I and renovated in 1893 by Abdülhamid II. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful of the lesser-known mosques in Turkey.
Interior
The biggest mosque in Kütahya, it’s decorated mostly in blue and white with touches of red, gold, and black. Those happen to be the most common colors in traditional Kütahya tiles. Click here for a virtual tour of the mosque.
My favorite feature of the mosque is the fountain in the center of the prayer hall. It seemed to add a lot to the interior design of the building.
Ablutions Fountain
Don’t miss the ablutions fountain (şadırvan) in front of the entrance. It’s adorned with Kütahya tiles.
In the Area
The Archaeology Museum and Tile Museum are located next to the Great Mosque while the Dönenler Mosque is across the street.
