On a 48 hour trip to Cairo with my friends Maria and Dana, one of the things we did was take a short felucca ride on the Nile. A felucca is a traditional sailboat used in Egypt.

Finding a Felucca

A taxi driver took us to a touristy section of the Nile where feluccas are available for rent. Dana found one with her last name on it so we decided to hire that one.

Sailing on the Nile

We set sail and passed a few landmarks along the Nile including the Cairo Tower. It’s the tallest structure in Egypt at 187m and was built in 1956. Click here for a virtual tour.

The enjoyable ride ended with the sun setting over the river.

Mishap

Unfortunately, before the ride was finished, we had a problem with the pilot. On the way back to the dock, he was making obscene gestures at the women. Dana yelled at him in Arabic, and the smiles stopped. He really killed the mood, and the rest of the ride back to the docks was quiet. In the beginning, we really believed the pilot was a reputable person, but he turned out to be a creep.
