Detroit has some fantastic museums. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting more than one of them. I hope to return in the future to see more.
Motown Museum
The only museum I’ve been able to visit on my multiple trips to Detroit is the Motown Museum, and if you’re a music lover, it’s incredible. It’s located at Hitsville, U.S.A., which was Motown Records first headquarters. Adult admission is US$20 (as of February 2024) and it’s open Wednesday through Sunday. It’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance online.
Tours are guided and last about an hour. No cameras, cell phones, or food are allowed on the tours. Visitors are able to see the famed Studio A, where countless superstars recorded hit songs 22 hours a day from 1959 to 1972, as well as the flat of founder Berry Gordy Jr., who lived upstairs. The gallery contains photos, records, and memorabilia, including Michael Jackson’s rhinestone glove and black fedora.
Other Museums
I have a whole list of other museums for future visits, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Historical Museum, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant. I’ll update once I have a chance to visit more of them.
