The tiny almost-ghost town of Death Valley Junction, with a population of about 20, has a remarkable story that makes it worth a detour. It sits in the California desert south of Death Valley National Park and only five miles from the Nevada border.
Boulder City is a planned city created for the workers and families of those who built the Hoover Dam. Located a short drive from the dam, it’s worth visiting the city to understand more about the daily lives of the people who came “to make the desert bloom”.
Valley of Fire Highway is the road linking the east and west entrances of Valley of Fire State Park, a National Natural Landmark. Along this stretch of road, there are several points of interest as well as campgrounds.
White Domes Road is a scenic drive at Valley of Fire State Park, a National Natural Landmark. It starts at the visitor center and runs north to the White Domes Trail. Along the road are picnic areas and trailheads.
Not too far outside of Bogotá is Tequendama Falls (Salto del Tequendama). It’s a popular tourist attraction and an important part of Muisca mythology.
Once you finish admiring the beautiful plaza, you can explore the rest of Monguí, one of Colombia’s Heritage Towns (Pueblos Patrimonio). The town isn’t very big so it doesn’t take very long to walk through the streets.
One of the fun things about Monguí are the handmade footballs that the town is famous for producing. A good place to learn about this industry is at the Football Museum (Museo del Balón). It’s located on the town plaza of this Colombian Heritage Town (Pueblo Patrimonio) and admission is free.
