The historic Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, Florida, is a place where people can “visit Greece without leaving Florida”. It’s a place I make a point to visit every time I’m visiting family in Clearwater, although it’s been Disneyfied and doesn’t have the same authentic feel it once had. Still, it’s a great place to eat Greek food if you can get past the over-commercialization.
When most tourists visit Tarpon Springs, Florida, they skip the downtown and head straight for the Sponge Docks. It’s worth stopping for a quick stroll downtown and there are even a couple of decent beaches not too far away.
I’ve been visiting Clearwater ever since my cousins moved there permanently from New York. It’s changed dramatically over the years, from a sleepier low-key destination to a place with huge expensive hotels lining the white sand beach. Honestly, I think it’s been ruined with all the development, but there have been a few positive changes.
Since there’s not much to do in downtown Clearwater, Florida, Clearwater Beach is the place to go. It has changed dramatically with huge luxury hotels popping up, but the white sand beach is still as beautiful as ever. Clearwater Beach has been a favorite destination for my family for several years, especially to visit my cousins who live there.
