Winterland is an annual holiday experience in Chicago. It’s held at Wrigley Field and Gallagher Way in Lakeview alongside Christkindlmarket and runs from mid-November through early January.
Visiting Winterland
Winterland is fun for people of all ages. Admission is US$5 (as of December 2023) and children age two and under are admitted free of charge. Individual ride tickets are US$4 each (as of December 2023). No cash is accepted – only debit or credit cards. Check the official website for more info.
Attractions
We went to meet a friend for lunch at Christkindlmarket and decided to made a day of it by taking our toddler to Winterland. He had a great time on the rides and we enjoyed the experience overall.
One of the main attractions is the outdoor ice skating rink. Rink access is US$12 with your own skates and US$20 including skate rental (as of December 2023).
Rides include a tilt-a-whirl, teacups, a carousel, ice slide, ice bumper cars, and a train ride around the infield. Private chalets are available for rent for up to 20 people. There’s also a large food tent serving all kinds of food and drinks, photos with Santa, games, and more.
Wrigley Field
In 2022, Winterland moved into iconic Wrigley Field for the first time. It gives visitors the chance to actually walk in the outfield, where all the attractions are located, and see the stadium from a player’s perspective.
In addition to being on the field, the lower concourse and some concession stands are open. I was able to see the plaques of Chicago Cubs players enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Outside the stadium at Gallagher Way, I could admire statues of Cubs legends including Fergie Jenkins and Ernie Banks (1931-2015).
