Ansermanuevo is a town in the north of the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia. It has very little touristic value, although the town’s rural areas are included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia.
History of Ansermanuevo
Ansermanuevo is one of the oldest towns in Colombia, founded on August 15, 1539, by Spanish conquistador Jorge Robledo (1500-1546). It became a municipality on April 29, 1925. In addition to coffee production, the area near the town is popular with hang gliders.
Town Square
During our short stop in Ansermanuevo we focused on the town square, which is where all the action is. It’s more pleasant than we expected, and has several tall trees, benches, street vendors, and a gazebo in the center.
The square is surrounded by buildings containing shops, restaurants, banks, and other places of business. A few of them are colorful traditional buildings.
Church of Santa Ana
On the south end of the square is the Church of Santa Ana (Iglesia de Santa Ana), which is a modern construction. Unfortunately, it was closed and we weren’t able to enter.
Where to Eat in Ansermanuevo
During our short visit to the town, we stopped into two places.
La Heladería
We stopped into La Heladería for a quick coffee and snack. It has a nice atmosphere but service was terrible and so was the coffee.
Aquí es Mateo
For dinner, we had delicious chorizo at Aquí es Mateo. It was some of the tastiest chorizo any of us had eaten in a long time.
