Thalero (Θαλερό) is a tiny village in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It’s located just two kilometers inland from the Gulf of Corinth and near the city of Xylokastro.
Introduction to Thalero
Thalero only has a population of about 200 people and is well known for its hospitality. It’s got beautiful views of the Gulf of Corinth and the surrounding countryside.
The village takes its name from the ancient Greek word thalos, which translates to blooming. This is due to the many flowers that are found growing there. Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos (1884-1951) would often spend time in the village and he also wrote a poem about it.
My Visit
I visited Thalero after an invitation from family friends for lunch and an excursion to the Monastery of Agios Vlasios. After driving in from Athens and stopping to see Ancient Corinth, they treated us to a delicious home-cooked meal. We then went on a short walk through the village. The walk only took about 20 minutes at a slow pace and I really appreciated the silence.
Our hosts took us around the main loop through the village, passing a small school, town square, doctor’s office, and mailboxes. The doctor only comes to the town a couple times a week.
From there, we walked to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin (Ιερός Ναός Κοιμήσεως Της Θεοτόκου), which was closed.
Finally, we paid a visit to the peaceful cemetery, which is located just outside the village at the edge of a small ridge. There are some spectacular views from the cemetery.
