Lake Tota is the largest lake in Colombia. It’s located in the department of Boyacá and is a great place to spend a relaxing few hours. Lake Tota is also an important sanctuary for many endangered species of birds.
Playa Blanca
The most popular place to visit on the lake is Playa Blanca, a beach on the western shore of the lake. After paying a few thousand pesos, you can continue down the path to the beach. Unfortunately for us, it was an overcast day and the colors weren’t as brilliant as they could have been.
The sand is powdery white, much like Playa Blanca on the Caribbean coast. The views of the lake and mountains in the background are beautiful from the shore.
While Playa Blanca is a beach and it’s possible to swim, the water is cold with an average temperature of 13 ºC. There were only two brave people who decided to swim.
Other activities at Playa Blanca include jet ski rental, cruises, camping, ATV rental, and horseback riding. There’s also a small restaurant.
Arco Iris del Lago
When we finished enjoying the lake, we went to Arco Iris del Lago, a restaurant near Playa Blanca. It sits on a peaceful corner of the lake down a steep path.
The views of Lago de Tota from the restaurant are as beautiful as they are at Playa Blanca.
The food, however, wasn’t as good as we expected from the reviews. Marisol had trout, which is caught fresh from the lake, and I had chicken. Both were dry and not very tasty. We also had a canelazo which was terrible.
Nearby Towns
The nearest towns are Aquitania and Tota. We stopped in Tota to see the plaza.
