The city of Paipa in Boyacá is famous for its natural hot springs, especially Hacienda El Salitre, but we decided to check out the rest of the city as well.

History

Paipa was originally inhabited by the indigenous Muisca people. In 1539, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada passed through on his search for the Sun Temple, which is located in Sogamoso. The modern town was founded on February 19, 1602. The main industries of the town are tourism and agriculture.

Parque Jaime Rook

There’s really nothing at all to see in the city center other than the main plaza, Parque Jaime Rook. It has a fountain and a church, Archangel Michael Church (Iglesia San Miguel Arcángel), and that’s about it.

Lake Sochagota

Just outside of town is Lake Sochagota. This artificial lake created in 1956 features a promenade on the east side. You can look out over the lake and see all the resorts and luxury homes. Barco Libertad, which offers dinner cruises, is docked there.

On the south side of the lake there are a couple boardwalks. You can see the city center of Paipa from there.
