Lajitas is a small unincorporated community nestled between Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park in Texas. Its name translates to “little flat rocks” in Spanish.
History
The town was first settled in 1895 when a mining boom began in the area. By 1912, there was a store, saloon, school with 50 pupils, and a customs house. A post office operated until 1959. Unfortunately, the mining boom lasted only 50 years, and by the 1940s, the population had dwindled to just four.
In the 1980s, as a joke, the residents elected Clay Henry, a beer-drinking goat, as the mayor. All of his descendants have also been elected mayor, but the stable where they lived is now closed.
Lajitas Golf Resort
The Lajitas Golf Resort is the town’s biggest draw. It features a world-class golf course, private airport, and a four-star hotel with a spa. The Lajitas Boardwalk, seen in the photos above, is part of the 20,000 acre resort. The Lajitas Cemetery and a mission church, which are on the resort’s property, are also worth checking out.
