The Bluff Great House is an archaeological site in Bluff, Utah. It was an Ancestral Puebloan great house much like the ones found at Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico.
History
The Bluff Great House was constructed between 1075 and 1150, and was abandoned around 1250. It contained about 60 rooms with four kivas and one great kiva. The site was partially excavated between 1996 and 2004.
Great Kiva
All that remains of the Bluff Great House is the great kiva, which is now about six feet underground. It was used as a community center for ceremonies and meetings. It’s now covered with a simple roof and it’s possible to go inside. An interpretive panel gives more information about the kiva and the archaeological site.
Views
The Bluff Great House sat on a hill above what is now the town of Bluff. You can get some nice views of the town and surrounding area from the site.
If you follow the road that leads to the site until the end, you can look into Calf Canyon.
