We drove through the small town of Panguitch, Utah, after visiting Bryce Canyon National Park. It was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1865, abandoned, and resettled again in 1871. The town was incorporated in 1899.

Main Street

It’s got a tiny but attractive Wild West style downtown, but unfortunately a lot of buildings were empty or boarded up. The downtown consists of a block running down Main Street, and there were a couple of restaurants in town.

Outlaws

Next to Panguitch Mercantile (formerly Cowboy Collectibles) is an alley. When we visited, there were a few pieces of kitsch. A wagon on one side had two skeletons on it that we thought was a bit comical.

Photos of outlaws including Butch Cassidy were on the opposite wall. Supposedly, Cassidy showed up in Panguitch 30 years after he had reportedly been killed in Bolivia. The legendary outlaw grew up north of the town near Circleville.

Moving On…

There’s really not much reason to stop in Panguitch. After our quick visit, we continued to Cedar City and Cedar Breaks National Monument.
