Highway 128 in Utah makes up the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway. This road runs 44 miles from just north of Moab to I-70.

We drove about ⅓ of the road leading north from Moab before turning around and heading back to town. There’s some spectacular scenery along the way as well as some campgrounds and opportunities for hiking, rafting, and other activities.

Our Stops

Our first photo stop was at the Big Bend Campground, which has primitive campsites.

Next, we stopped at Salt Wash. Salt Valley in Arches National Park drains into the Colorado River from this point.

Finally, we stopped a bit further up the road near the Red Cliffs Lodge to take another photo.

At the lodge, there’s the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage along with the Cowboy Grill and luxury accommodation. Unfortunately, we were running short on time and decided not stop. We went a few more miles up the road from there before turning around.

Next Time

On a return trip to the area, I’d like to spend a good half or full day enjoying the attractions on the highway and maybe do one of the hikes as well.
