La Calera is a small town about 30 minutes from Bogotá. We passed through the town on the way to Guatavita and made a quick stop.
General Info
La Calera is a popular weekend destination for Bogotanos. While heading up into the mountains from Bogotá, there are several restaurants on the side of the mountain with great views of the city. It was once inhabited by the indigenous Muisca people. The modern town was founded on December 16, 1772, and the main economy is cement mining.
Plaza
There’s really nothing to see in town, but we stopped and visited the small plaza which is very nice. It’s got a few trees and some benches in the center. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario) sits on one end.
The plaza is surrounded by a few colonial buildings with balconies.
Heading Out
From the main highway passing through La Calera, we caught the bus to the sleepy town of Guasca, which also has nothing of interest except a large plaza. That ride took 30 minutes, and it was another 30 minutes before reaching the town of Guatavita. From there, we were able to visit Lake Guatavita.
