Kütahya Castle (Kütahya Kalesi) occupies the highest point in Kütahya. The area has been occupied since ancient times. The castle was originally built by the Byzantines and restored by the Ottomans. I decided to hike up to the castle after exploring the city center and visiting some museums.
Walking Up
I found the path up to the castle just above the bazaar area. It only took me about 10 minutes to walk up.
On the way up, I was tempted to stop at a small house for some çay (tea) and gözleme, but I passed.
Kütahya Castle
When I reached the castle, I realized there wasn’t much to see. It once had 72 towers but most of them are ruined. There seemed to be a restaurant at the top but it was closed during my visit. I’m guessing it’s open in the summer.
Anyway, if you do make it all the way up there and nothing’s open, the views from the top are incredible.
