After exploring the Samsun city center, I hopped on the train and headed to Amazon Island (Amazon Adası). This large “island” made of land reclaimed from the Black Sea sits on the outskirts of the city. It has been used as a public park since it opened in 2012. If you like cheesy, this place is for you.
Amazon Village
The park has a huge statue of an Amazon woman flanked by two Anatolian lions. There’s even a “reconstructed” Amazon village. On top of a small hill is a nice café, and there are other restaurants as well. Much of the park was still under construction during my visit.
A positive about the park is that it’s beautifully landscaped and a great place to come and take a walk, either along the Black Sea or the artificial river that flows through it.
Amisos Hill
A cable car from the park serves Amisos Hill (Amisos Tepesi). This hill was the site of the ancient city of Amisos. There’s a café at the top along with a small archaeological park. The wind was blowing too much on the day of my visit so the cable car wasn’t running. I wasn’t able to make it up the hill.
