The second stop on my day exploring the area around Safranbolu was outside the village of İncekaya to see the Tokatlı Canyon and İncekaya Aqueduct.
İncekaya Aqueduct
First, I visited the İncekaya Aqueduct (İncekaya Su Kemeri), which was built by İzzet Mehmed Pasha (1743-1812) in the 1790s. It’s 116 meters (381 feet) long and its maximum height is 60 meters (200 feet).
The aqueduct crosses a small section of the Tokatlı Canyon (Tokatlı Kanyonu) and has a nice viewing platform from where you can get a good perspective. It’s also possible to walk across.
Tokatlı Canyon
After admiring the aqueduct, I climbed down the steps from the viewing platform into Tokatlı Canyon. I took a nice long hike through the peaceful canyon without seeing another soul the entire time.
The only sounds I heard were the birds chirping and the flow of a small creek through the canyon. I even met a friendly horse grazing in a small opening.
Getting There
As far as I know, there’s no public transportation to the aqueduct and canyon. For my excursion, I hired a taxi to take me to Bulak Mencilis Cave, the aqueduct, and the village of Yörükköyü. The driver offered to do all three sites for a discount. There wasn’t a schedule and I was able to take my time at each site.
