Liberation Square (Ploshtad Svoboda) is the main square in Ruse. It’s a beautiful, wide-open space with perfectly manicured gardens and fountains.
Monument of Liberty
In the center of the square is the tall Monument of Liberty, erected in 1909. It was designed by Italian sculptor Arnoldo Zocchi.
Government Buildings
The square is also the town center of government. You can find both the Palace of Justice and Municipality Hall located there.
Revenue Building
The crown jewel of Liberation Square is the Revenue Building (Dohodno Zdanie). It was built in 1900.
The ground floor of the building was leased to shopkeepers and it also contained a casino, theatre, and library. The Mercury statue on the rooftop of the building is a symbol of the city.
Architecture
Around the square, you’ll find lots of beautiful architecture with the buildings painted in different bright colors. Some of the buildings needed a little maintenance but they still added to the charm of the square.
One interesting piece of information: in the bright blue building in the picture above, the very first public movie in Bulgaria was shown in 1897.
Aleksandrovska Street
Aleksandrovska Street (ulitsa Aleksandrovska) cuts across the north side of the square. To the east, there is a nice pedestrian mall. To the west, it leads to Battenberg Square.
