Valparaiso Restaurants

Valparaiso has a whole lot of great restaurants and sweet shops to choose from. I haven’t tried everything but I’ll tell you about the ones I know, in no special order. First, on the east side of the square, I like Valley, which offers food fresh from a local farm.

Near Valley is the Chocolate Café, run by the South Bend Chocolate Company. They offer the “world’s best hot chocolate” and an assortment of hand-made chocolates.

On the north side of the square is Old Style Inn and Silver Spoon. Just off the square to the north is Meditrina, a Mediterranean restaurant with healthy food.

The block to the east is Don Quijote, which is the one of the oldest restaurants in town and serves incredible Spanish food. It’s Indiana’s only authentic Spanish restaurant.

For the main course, the things to eat at Don Quijote are the delicious tapas dishes. Get the mussels, octopus, and calamari if you like seafood. Vegetarian dishes like cauliflower, mushrooms, potatoes, and more are great complements to the heavier dishes. Don’t forget to give the jamón serrano and manchega cheese plate a try.

On the block just west of the square is Bon Femme (great food with a French twist), Pikk’s Tavern (a Chicago-style steakhouse), Designer Desserts, and Good to Go by Lucrezia (sandwiches, salads, and flatbreads). A bit further west is Stacks Bar and Grill.

A half block to the east is Blackbird Café, which has good sandwiches, salads, chili, and coffees. Further to the east is Main and Lincoln, which has a creative menu. I love the scallops and the burger. Old standby Round the Clock has good diner food and one of the best breakfasts you can get.

Greek’s Pizzeria and Figure Eight Brewing are both just southwest of the square. Old World Market, on the southwest corner of the square, has all kinds of high quality foods and a great selection of cheeses and wines. Southeast of the square behind the Porter County Museum is Casa del Mar, which has good Mexican food.

A trip to Valpo isn’t complete without a stop at Valpo Velvet Ice Cream Shoppe, which is the best locally made ice cream in Indiana.
