While on an organized tour to El Totumo Mud Volcano, we stopped for lunch at the small seaside village of Manzanillo del Mar on our way back to Cartagena. As lunch was being prepared, we had some time to swim at the not so nice beach.

Catch of the Day

I was walking on the beach and spotted a few men running towards the sea. I realized it was the local fisherman bringing in their nets. It started out with just a few of them pulling in a net right off the beach. As several more jumped in to help, I ran over to watch.

Within seconds, a crowd had gathered to see the men collect the fish. They filled up two full crates.

Small children watched in amazement as each fish was pulled from the net. At the end, some of the children reached in and took out seashells and small fish that weren’t meant to be caught.

As the crates were being carried away and the nets were finally empty, the crowd began to disperse. All of this only took about 15 minutes but it was one of the highlights of my tour to the mud volcano that day.
