I spent a lot of time with the people I met in the hostel on Ilhabela, bonding after the bank robbery our first night. Ben, a Canadian, and Esmee and Julie, from Holland, went on a jeep tour with me to Praia de Castelhanos on the Atlantic side of the island. The tour cost BRA$80 per person. We were picked up from the hostel at 10:30am and took an hour drive over a rough trail to Castelhanos. The trail runs through a protected rain forest, Parque Estadual de Ilhabela (Ilhabela State Park).
Once at the beach, we went on a short 30 minute hike to a gorgeous waterfall, Cachoeira do Gato. We had a quick swim in the freezing cold water and hiked back to Castelhanos.
At Praia de Castelhanos, we had about two and a half hours to do whatever we wanted. We all had lunch at a nice fish restaurant on the beach for a reasonable price. Ben and Esmee went surfing, and I laid out in the sun. It was exactly the kind of day we all planned.
