It was a very tiring day walking through Athens with my friend Eleni. We were dead by the time we got to our final stop, the First Cemetery of Athens (pun intended). It’s where prominent Athenians have been buried since 1837, some in luxurious and impressive tombs.
Many famous actors, musicians, and poets are buried here, including Melina Mercouri, Odysseas Elytis, Dimitris Mitropanos, Vasilis Tsitsanis, Giorgos Seferis, and several prominent politicians and heroes such as Theodoros Kolokotronis.
Unfortunately, the cemetery had no map indicating the famous tombs, and it wasn’t well-marked. It’s also unbelievably huge and it would have taken a couple hours to walk through it properly. After wandering around aimlessly, we gave up and went for souvlaki.
