Vrontados (Βροντάδος) is a large town north of Chora in Chios, Greece. It’s the home of many Chian ship owners and the famous rouketopolemos, or rocket war, at Easter. Other than lots of churches, there are a couple points of interest.
Daskalopetra
Daskalopetra (Δασκαλόπετρα) is located near a beach in Vrontados that shares its name. Tradition says that this is where the blind poet Homer sat and taught his students, thus the name Daskalopetra (literally Teacher’s Rock). It’s also considered to be part of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Cybele.
Heroes Monument
High above Vrontados on the road to the northwest part of Chios is the Heroes Monument. It’s dedicated to Chians who lost their lives during a battle against Ottoman forces on Epos Hill on November 15, 1912.
Near the Heroes Monument is the tomb of author Ioannis Psycharis (1854-1929). He was born in Odessa in 1854, spent some time in Constantinople, and later moved to Paris. He died in Paris and his body was sent to Chios for burial.
From the top of the hill, there are phenomenal views of Vrontados and the coastline. You can also see the crazy road that winds up into the mountains.
