During the Chernobyl tour, we walked past several different residential buildings in Pripyat. Some were several stories high while others stood only a few stories.

Residential Zone

Our final stop was to visit a residential zone locate on Sportivnaya Street, across from Public Pool “Lazurny”. While walking down the street, we were shown the Consumer Services Center “Yubileyny” and passed by a postbox and a few signs.

We then made our way to the center of the residential complex which included buildings of various sizes.

The building we entered was 17 Sportivnaya Street. We walked through several different apartments and saw furniture, large appliances, and some personal items scattered throughout the rooms. Former residents are allowed to visit their homes in Pripyat once a year on May 9, which happened to be the day I took my tour, but we didn’t come across anyone in this building.

We then climbed up the stairs all the way up to the rooftop. Apparently the guide only allowed us to do so because we had a small group of just three. With bigger groups, there’s more of a liability because the buildings are in terrible shape and guides are not allowed to take tourists in most of them.
