One of my favorite things to do in Istanbul is sit with friends and have a waffle. You can find waffles all over Istanbul, but the most popular place to get them is in the Bebek district of Beşiktaş. My personal favorite is Kemal Usta in Bebek, or their branch in the Moda district of Kadıköy. They have a few other branches as well.
Walk into one one of the shops and an attendant will pour the batter into the waffle iron to make a fresh waffle for you. When it’s finished, you can choose from several different types of çikolata (chocolate) spreads such as muzlu (banana), fındıklı (hazelnut), sütlü (milk), fıstıklı (pistachio), bademli (almond), bitter, beyaz (white), and frambuazlı (raspberry), or a simple karamel (caramel). You can choose two of them, one for each half of the waffle.
Next comes the fruit. You choose from an array of fresh muz (banana), kivi (kiwi), kiraz (cherry), ananas (pineapple), çilek (strawberry), böğürtlen (blackberry), frambuaz (raspberry), among others. Your choice of fruit is pretty much unlimited. I usually went with muz, kivi, and çilek.
Lastly, you can sprinkle one or many different toppings on your waffle creation. Coconut, marzipan, ceviz (walnuts), fıstık (pistachios), fındık (hazelnuts), sprinkles, chocolate chips, gummy bears, and many many more!
When your waffle is done, it will be handed to you wrapped up in paper and eaten like a messy sandwich, or on a plate and eaten with a knife and fork. It’s a delicious treat that should cost between 9TL and 12TL depending on the store. Enjoy!
