Kütahya has a small collection of nicely restored Ottoman mansions, and the best ones sit along cobblestoned Germiyan Street (Germiyan Sokağı).

Bazaar

After walking down from Kütahya Castle I wandered through the bazaar area on my way to Germiyan Street. It was a nice glimpse into the life of locals.

Germiyan Street

At the end of the bazaar I found Germiyan Street. At the beginning, most of the homes were crumbling or being restored. The only restored home among them was the Alopaşalı Sugar Mansion (Alopaşalı Şeker Konağı), which was being used as an art gallery.

The further along the street I walked, the nicer it got. The first important one is the Mehmet Gürsoy Ceramic Workshop. He makes tiles the traditional Turkish way and has been designated a UNESCO Living Human Treasure. Across the street is the Cemile Gül Art Gallery (Cemile Gül Sanat Galerisi), which is a gallery with a home and fashion collection.

The next mansions are the Hanedan Mansion (Hanedan Konağı), a restaurant; the Ispartalılar Mansion (Ispartalılar Konağı), a hotel and restaurant; and the Germiyan Mansion (Germiyan Konağı), an upscale restaurant serving Ottoman cuisine.
