On my very first trip to Bursa, Turkey, I spent the night in a hotel near Fevzi Çakmak Avenue (Fevzi Çakmak Caddesi), which is one of the major streets in the city center.

I walked down Fevzi Çakmak Avenue to the historic city center in the morning which took about 15 minutes. It’s a wide thoroughfare with trees in the median and large modern buildings along both sides.

Kent Meydanı Shopping Mall

Kent Meydanı Shopping Mall (Kent Meydanı AVM), which translates to Town Square, is on the northern end of Fevzi Çakmak Avenue. At first glance, it’s just a modern shopping mall and convention center.

But when I went at night there was a wonderful local street market nearby. It was a great insight into daily life in Bursa. I was also able to eat all kinds of delicious street food, like buttered corn and lahmacun. I chose to make this my dinner and got a lot of food for just a little money.

Osman I Monument

On the southern end of the street, there’s a monument to Sultan Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire. His son Orhan conquered Bursa and made it the capital of the empire. It sits in the middle of a roundabout at Democracy Square (Demokrasi Meydanı), which is located near the Şehreküstü metro station. From there, it’s a straight shot into the old city, where you can explore the bazaar area, museums, and important landmarks like the Grand Mosque of Bursa.
